by Sandra Snyder

Book lovers and avid readers get ready for the big book fair coming to ATLAPA Convention Center, May 15-20, 2007. Priscilla Delgado, presidenta of the Camara Panamena del Libro, first announced the IV Feria Internacional del Libro in December. More than 232 stands dedicated to books are scheduled to fill the convention center. Major children’s book publisher Piggy Books will be found in the children’s section. There will be books in Spanish and English as well as other languages.

The concept of a book fair started in 2001, is held every other year and a different guest country has participated in each event. Spain is the honoree this year and a number of notable Spanish writers as well as local authors have been invited for the event including: Arturo Pérez Reverte, Almudena Grandes and the famous Flamengo performer el Cantautor Español Diego El Cigala. There will also be experts to discuss the most famous VIII Centenario del Cantar del Mío Cid. This book predates Don Quiote.

This is an excellent opportunity to shop for books, meet some interesting authors, attend a lecture on a variety of topics and discover just how much in the way of books Panama has to offer. There will be many musical presentations to entertain you as well.

Opening ceremonies will take place on Tuesday, May 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Teatro Anayansi. The fair will operate daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Charlas are scheduled for the morning and afternoon each day including talks by local authors, book publishers (McGraw Hill), computer expert (Dell Inc.), and children’s authors and much, much more.

Wednesday evening, May 16, at 6:00 p.m. there will be an inauguration of the Exposition of Cervantes in the vestibule and on the 17th at 8:30 p.m. in the teatro Anayansi there will be a presentation of Diego El Cigala. Pick up a program at the fair entrance for the full schedule of daily events.

Tickets are available at the door: $2.00 adults, $1.50 Jubilados and students in uniform, $1.00 for children ages 1-12. You can also purchase a Cultural Passport in advance from the Chamber of Commerce of Books (Camara Panamena del Libro in El Cangrejo), the Liberia Cultural, or Universidad de Arte Ganexa or K.W. Continente in Via Argentina. The Passport will give you access to the fair, events and charlas all six days. The Passport costs $10.00 and includes the Gala concert on the 16th.
